US Secretary of State Antony Blinken addressed the future of the Gaza Strip following the announcement by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of a “post-war” plan involving Hamas. The plan purportedly aims to maintain Israel’s “security control” over the occupied territories of the West Bank and Gaza. Blinken’s remarks came amidst his brief visit to Argentina, highlighting the United States’ position on the situation in the Middle East, particularly after the cessation of hostilities. Blinken emphasized that while he has not yet reviewed the specifics of Netanyahu’s proposed plan, the United States maintains fundamental principles concerning the future governance and security of the Gaza Strip. “I haven’t seen the plan, so I’m withholding judgment,” Blinken said, indicating a cautious approach to the unfolding developments. His statement underscored the importance of adhering to established principles that the United States considers crucial for the well-being and stability of the region. One of the key points Blinken reiterated was the US opposition to any form of “re-occupation” of the Gaza Strip. This stance reflects a broader international consensus on the need for a peaceful and sustainable resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, one that respects the rights and aspirations of both parties. The Secretary of State’s comments align with the longstanding US policy advocating for a two-state solution, aiming to establish a viable Palestinian state alongside Israel, ensuring security, and fostering cooperation.
