This week, the Canadian Ministry of Foreign Affairs sponsored an international summit of women ministers of foreign affairs, which turned Toronto into a hub for conversations about gender equity and international diplomacy. Under the direction of Minister Mélanie Joly, this important event gave women’s leaders a forum to exchange ideas and tactics for creating a more just and equitable society. The event’s co-host, Minister Joly, stressed the revolutionary power of women’s involvement in politics and diplomacy. She said, “People and societies benefit when women participate in politics and diplomacy,” in a statement on X. Together, we exchanged insights and ideas for constructive change that will lead to a more just and equitable world.

The Women Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (WFMM) brought together foreign ministers from various countries to deliberate on key issues surrounding women’s full, equal, and meaningful participation in governance and public life. This assembly drew on the participants’ lived experiences and official positions to enrich the global dialogue on the importance of women in public spaces and to shed light on the challenges they face.
One of the critical topics discussed was combating disinformation and online violence targeting women leaders. As digital platforms continue to play a pivotal role in shaping public discourse, ensuring a safe and supportive online environment for women leaders has become increasingly essential. Strategies for addressing these challenges were a focal point, with ministers exchanging ideas on policies and initiatives to mitigate the adverse effects of online hostility.
The meeting also highlighted the broader societal benefits of women’s involvement in governance. Studies have consistently shown that when women are involved in decision-making processes, policies tend to be more inclusive and reflective of diverse perspectives, leading to more sustainable and equitable outcomes.
This event in Toronto is part of a broader effort to promote gender equity on the international stage. By bringing together women leaders from around the globe, the WFMM aims to create a unified voice advocating for systemic change and to inspire future generations of women to take on leadership roles.
As the meeting concluded, the collective resolve to push for gender equity in governance was evident. The participants left with a renewed commitment to advancing these goals in their respective countries, armed with shared experiences and strategies for overcoming the barriers that continue to impede progress. A major step forward in the global movement for gender equity has been made with the international gathering of women ministers of foreign affairs. It has created the conditions for further discussion and action to guarantee that women’s views are respected and heard at all levels of governance.
