Former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo expressed his alarm over what he saw as a “violent, pro-Hamas mob threatening and attacking Jewish students” in a recent statement, characterising the scenario as more than just a demonstration. This remark has brought attention to the continuing Israeli-Palestinian conflict tensions on campus and sparked concerns about student safety and the university’s handling of accusations of anti-Semitism. The context of Pompeo’s statement relates to a series of events at Columbia University, where a group of students were reportedly demonstrating in support of Palestinian rights. These events have garnered significant attention due to claims of aggression and harassment directed towards Jewish students, with some alleging that the protests have created a hostile environment for those who support Israel or identify with Jewish heritage. Pompeo, a known supporter of Israel during his tenure in the Trump administration, has not held back in his criticism of the protests. He has used strong language to characterize the demonstrators, aligning them with Hamas, a Palestinian Islamist political organization and militant group that the United States and several other countries have designated as a terrorist organization. Pompeo’s use of the term “mob” implies a lack of organization and suggests a chaotic, violent nature to the demonstrations.
