Presidential candidate Cozmin Gusa: Romania should propose itself as the permanent host of the peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine

The topic of today’s editorial is related to peace, and the proposal I am formulating is from the position of a journalist, that is, a public intellectual, who is now running for the presidency of Romania. I want to make this proposal a topic of debate during the presidential campaign. Goldist friends, only disbelievers could not want peace in Ukraine today. Because of this war, Europe has fallen into uncontrolled economic decline, and that is an obvious thing. For Romania and for Romanians, the situation is even more dramatic: in the event of an extension of the Ukrainian war, we are on the front lines of the NATO front, totally unprepared for any kind of military confrontation, even one with minor adversaries, let alone if it raises the issue of a Russian offensive. Realistically, we have to admit today that we don’t even have the military resources to last for the minimum interval of two to three days in which NATO could mobilise in the event of an attack on Romania, but today you know very well that the mobilisation of the Atlantic countries appears improbable and not even operative.

I leave it to you, therefore, to imagine the morass of a future confrontation involving Romania’s territory and resources. It will be clear that we urgently need to play the peace card, the CSAT to modify our approach regarding the war, Romanian diplomacy to start proactively campaigning for peace. These things we have to do. We should, therefore, operationalize many concrete actions, but among the first of these, I, Cozmin Gușă, publicly request, as an independent presidential candidate, to propose ourselves as the permanent host of the future peace negotiations, something that would suddenly change the paradigm discussions within NATO.
Don’t let anyone tell me at this point that this is complicated. I can give many arguments, but I will give you the most well-known one, namely that Iohannis was able to put himself forward for the headship of NATO, as you well know, so we also have the precedent of Romanian pro-activism within the organization. As for me, I am at the disposal of our officials and offer my expertise for free for the formalization of such an approach that would quickly put Romania back on the map of geopolitical influence.
Our assets are the most important of all NATO countries, and compared to Turkey, one of the main contenders for hosting the peace negotiations, we also have the advantage of belonging to the European Union. Future peace negotiations must be hosted by an environment that is welcoming and compatible with that of states at war. Thus, like Russia and Ukraine, Romania is a European, ex-communist, Orthodox country like Russia and most of Ukraine.
We are the frontier of the Euro-Atlantic space, just like Poland, but in addition to them we also have the advantage of being on the shores of the Black Sea, which is currently in the Russian-Ukrainian dispute, on the Crimea-Odessa-Danube mouth line. The social situation is still calm in Romania; we have no territorial disputes with our neighbors, we have no particular internal animosities, and the so-called territorial dispute with Ukraine, historical, is now closed by a treaty.
This is just my brief presentation, but even so, briefly, it would be clear to all international geopolitical actors that Romania’s offer is unbeatable under normal conditions. In addition, the traditional geostrategic strategy of the United States of America, which places Romania and Bucharest as communication points between Washington and Moscow, would help us a lot. This geostrategy has been publicly exposed numerous times and agreed upon by all parties. Finally, I tell you that the advantages for Romania would be huge if such international positioning and validation were to succeed.
As for me, I also invite other specialists (and we have some very good ones) to express themselves on this topic. I am convinced, however, that if we succeed in such a self-proposal, from the start the international status of Romania will be upgraded (to use an international diplomatic language) and we will position ourselves in a way that will bring us urgent benefits and, even more more importantly, to bring back some of the diplomatic respect that we lost in an accelerated manner during the Băsescu and Iohannis mandates.
