Vjosa Osmani, the president of Kosovo, got into a heated argument with airport security staff on Thursday in Skopje, North Macedonia, in an extraordinary diplomatic episode that sent shockwaves across the Balkan region. Vitia reported to the Kosovar press that the president refused the request, deeming it “contrary to international practice.”

“The president did not hand over the phone because it would have been a serious violation,” Vitia explained. Despite the president’s team attempting to clarify the rules and the diplomatic protocols typically afforded to heads of state, the situation deteriorated. Vitia alleged that an airport staff member attempted to physically push President Osmani, prompting her security team to intervene.
