United States’ Interest in Greenland’s Mineral Resources and Prospects of Cooperation with Denmark

Greenland, the world’s largest island, has been garnering significant attention from the United States (U.S.) in recent years due to its abundant mineral resources and strategic location. As climate change continues to reshape the Arctic landscape, the region’s untapped resources have become increasingly accessible, sparking interest among global powers. United States’ interest in Greenland’s mineral wealth and the potential for a cooperative agreement with Denmark, the country under whose jurisdiction Greenland falls. Greenland is a treasure trove of diverse mineral resources, including rare earth elements (REEs), uranium, zinc, gold, diamonds, and oil. Of particular significance are the REEs, which are critical for various industries, including electronics, renewable energy, and defense technologies. China currently dominates the global REE market, making the U.S. keen to diversify its supply chain and reduce dependence on a single source. Greenland’s estimated deposits of REEs make it an attractive alternative.

Cooperation Agreement with Denmark:

A potential cooperation agreement between the U.S. and Denmark could involve collaboration in several areas. Firstly, it could focus on joint research and development initiatives to explore and exploit Greenland’s mineral resources responsibly. This could include technological advancements, environmental safeguards, and sustainable extraction practices. Recognizing the need to diversify its supply chains and secure critical resources, the U.S. is keen to explore potential cooperation with Denmark and leverage Greenland’s wealth responsibly. A cooperative agreement would not only benefit the U.S. but also contribute to the sustainable development of Greenland, fostering economic growth and regional stability. However, any collaboration should prioritize environmental protection, indigenous rights and environmental conservation.
