Chinese Premier Li Qiang made a major diplomatic step on Thursday when he arrived in New Zealand. This was the start of a six-day visit around Oceania aimed at strengthening trade connections against the challenging security situation in the region. This voyage, which also takes in a trip to Australia, is noteworthy because it’s the first time a high-ranking Chinese official has visited since 2017. Premier Li’s visit kicked off with a formal reception ceremony at the official residence of the Governor-General of New Zealand. This initial engagement sets the tone for a series of high-level meetings aimed at deepening economic ties and addressing mutual concerns between China and its Pacific partners. During his stay in New Zealand, Premier Li Qiang is scheduled to engage in discussions with New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon. These talks are expected to cover a range of topics from trade and investment opportunities to more contentious issues where the two nations hold differing viewpoints. Prime Minister Luxon emphasized the importance of these discussions, stating on Monday, “New Zealand and China are engaged on issues where we have common interests and we talk honestly and constructively about issues on which we have differences.”
