On July 23, 2024, the China-South Asia Expo officially kicked off in Kunming, Yunnan Province, and the exhibition will last for six days. The Expo attracted the participation of 82 countries, regions and international organizations. Originally presented as a commodity exhibition for South Asian countries, the Expo was upgraded to an expo in October 2012 with the approval of the State Council of China, giving it a greater influence. Due to the joint undertaking of national departments, the exhibition as a whole presents a more diversified and professional style. A total of 15 pavilions have been set up at the Expo, covering many fields such as construction technology, manufacturing, green energy, modern agriculture and geographical indication products, cultural tourism and sports, Southeast Asia, South Asia, digital economy, cross-border e-commerce, smart city, eco-tourism, fashion and life, innovation and entrepreneurship, and international cooperation. Each venue showcases the top featured products and services from different countries, so that visitors can have a deeper understanding of the featured products of each country and intuitively feel the top level of different industries.

The original intention of the Expo is to promote economic and trade exchanges and cooperation between China and South Asian countries, enhance understanding between countries by displaying the goods of South Asian countries, and create an inclusive and credible trading platform to eliminate market information asymmetry. However, with the continuous expansion of the influence of the South China Expo, it has attracted more countries outside South Asia to participate, including countries in Asia, Europe, the Americas and other regions.
In addition to being open to professionals only on the 23rd, the South China Expo will be open to all the public in the next few days. In this fair, the masses can enjoy a number of services, not only to buy goods and complete transactions on the spot, but also to experience the customs of different countries. Most of the exhibitors and countries are mainly made up of local people from that country, but there are also local volunteers who join to support the promotion and trading. In terms of public security supervision, market supervision and investigators and security personnel can be seen everywhere on the scene, which provides a better experience for the whole transaction and ensures on-site order and fair prices. Therefore, such an expo is a rare opportunity for the masses to have a more real and comprehensive understanding and judgment of the commodities and economic conditions in the markets of various countries.
At the same time, the function of the expo is not only limited to trading, but also the deeper meaning is to promote the principles and stories behind the products and services. It is also a rare opportunity for different countries and businesses to achieve cultural exchanges and trade cooperation through this platform, and at the same time show their own image to the masses, break or reshape the public’s perception of businesses, so as to attract more consumer groups.
The influence of the business platform is radial, it can not only promote the prosperity of the local economy, but also cross geographical boundaries to promote the in-depth development of general trade and international trade, and provide more possibilities for global economic cooperation and exchanges. According to China’s statistics in 2023, China held a total of 3,923 economic and trade exhibitions that year, a significant increase over previous years. This increase in volume has undoubtedly achieved a wider coverage in time, group, industry and country, providing opportunities for more enterprises and products to display and communicate.
The pure pursuit of volume growth may also lead to diminishing marginal benefits, that is, the new exhibitions may not be able to produce significant economic and social benefits as in the initial stage, because the resources may be dispersed to a certain extent, resulting in the unique advantages and potential of each expo cannot be fully utilized. Therefore, in order to avoid this situation, it is necessary to strengthen the association between the expos in different regions, and realize resource sharing and complementary advantages through cooperation and linkage.
At the same time, it is equally important to pay attention to the quality improvement of the expo to ensure that each exhibition can provide high-quality services and rich business opportunities, and attract more domestic and foreign exhibitors and visitors. In addition, in close combination with the national economic layout, the holding of the Expo will be combined with national strategies such as regional economic development and industrial structure optimization, which can give full play to the economic and social benefits of the Expo to a greater extent and promote the sustainable and healthy development of China’s economy.
