2022 Beijing Winter Olympic Games

The 2022 Beijing Olympic Winter Games has 7 major sports, 15 sub-sports and 109 minor sports.
On 17 September 2021, the Beijing Winter Olympics and Paralympics unveiled their theme slogan “Together for the Future”. 4 February, the opening ceremony of the 24th Winter Olympic Games was held at the National Stadium, with Xi Jinping, General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, President of the People’s Republic of China and Chairman of the Central Military Commission, attending the opening ceremony and declaring the Games open. On 6 February, IOC President Thomas Bach told a press conference in Beijing that the Beijing Winter Olympics had made history and left a whole new set of standards for the Olympics that will open a new chapter in global ice and snow sports. And 20 February saw the closing of the Beijing Winter Olympics.

Founding Philosophy

The Beijing Winter Olympic Village is designed and built-in accordance with the “Green Olympic Games” concept, using the international leading “Healthy Building” gold standard to provide a comfortable and healthy living environment for the residents. The integrated clinic has been built as a model building with ultra-low energy consumption, which enhances the experience of use while saving energy and reducing emissions.

In addition, the Beijing Winter Olympic Village attaches great importance to barrier-free construction, meeting the needs of people with disabilities in various aspects such as the design of traffic flow, the selection of road construction materials, the use of indoor furniture layout and the development of a barrier-free intelligent service platform.

Technology applications

Compared to previous Winter Olympics, the Beijing Winter Olympics uses the latest technology to provide viewers around the world with unprecedented live broadcasts and comprehensive coverage. It also uses “5G+8K” technology to broadcast the event, which was the first time in the history of Winter Olympics that a country used the “8K video” technology to broadcast the opening ceremony and televise key events.

In terms of new technology applications for transmission, in addition to baseband and complete IP transmission solutions, new 5G wireless transmission was added for regularised 5G mobile broadcast and event production coverage.

More technical means and innovative applications are used in the Beijing Winter Olympics television broadcast to assist and extend the effects of the broadcast, such as the use of: 3D playback, venue simulation, drones, bio-data, subjective cameras, sound capture, arbitration signals, etc. “The Cheetah ultra-high-speed 4K track camera” is a special camera developed by CCTV over a five-year period, specifically for the broadcast of speed skating events at the Winter Olympics. “The Cheetah” is designed to reach a technical standard of 25 meters per second, which is equivalent to a speed of 90 kilometers per hour. “The Cheetah” can also accelerate, decelerate and overtake according to the needs of the broadcast, thus capturing the various scenes of the speed skating competition in a more flexible and casual manner.

Greening the Olympics

Green Olympics is one of the core concepts of the Beijing Winter Olympics.

  • China Unicom insists on the common construction and sharing of 5G base stations to accelerate the landing and application of 5G. By the end of May 2020, China Unicom had opened a total of 115,000 shared base stations, with nearly 130,000 available 5G base stations.
  • China Unicom builds a smart application platform for the Winter Olympics with the help of 5G, artificial intelligence and other technologies to enrich the application scenarios of smart venues. The smart venues integrate information technology, intelligence and digitalization, running through the concept of “technology Winter Olympics”.

Initiative for Beijing Winter Olympics athletes to consciously use non-fluorinated snow wax.

  • Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics aims to be carbon neutral. The 2022 Beijing Winter Olympic Games fully implements green initiatives, making full use of the original Olympic venues such as the Bird’s Nest, the Water Cube and Wukesong, and reducing the environmental impact of the new venues from the source of design. The National Speed Skating Stadium ‘Ice Ribbon’ became the world’s first speed skating stadium to use a CO2 cross-critical direct cooling system to produce ice, with carbon emissions approaching zero. All Winter Olympic venues met green building standards and used 100% green power for conventional energy. The opening ceremony was held with “no fire” instead of “ignition” and “micro-fire” instead of a large fire, fully reflecting low-carbon environmental protection. Through the use of large amounts of photovoltaic and wind power generation, local donations of forestry carbon sinks, and corporate sponsorship of certified carbon emission reductions, the Beijing Winter Olympics became the first ‘carbon-neutral’ Winter Games to date.

A blend of cultures

At this Beijing Winter Olympics, nearly 3,000 athletes from 91 countries and regions participated in the Games. The athletes fought hard and achieved many successes on the field. More importantly, the Olympic Games are not just a competition, but a cultural exchange and integration event from the heart.

On 4 February, the opening of the Winter Olympics coincided with the start of spring. The National Stadium was once again a ‘highlight’, with the ‘Bird’s Nest’ in all its glory and glory at night. The “Five Rings of Ice and Snow” created by the “Water of the Yellow River” and the “Big Snowflake” symbolizing unity and win-win situation, and so on.

On February 5, a chic mini–Spring Festival “temple fair” attracted tourists attending the Winter Olympics welcome banquet in the Great Hall of the People. Chinese folk culture such as Chinese New Year paintings, spring scrolls, Chinese knots, incense pouches, paper-cutting and Peking Opera face painting were cleverly blended with the elements of the Winter Olympics theme, which was praised by the tourists.

Civilization is enriched by exchange and mutual appreciation. When the Winter Olympic Games met the Chinese New Year, athletes from all over the world followed the customs of their hometown, writing “Fu” characters, putting up spring scrolls and watching the “Spring Festival Gala”. Chinese delicacies such as Kung Pao Chicken, Ma Po Tofu, Peking Duck, leek boxes and bean buns were also popular. The Beijing Winter Olympics is not only a competitive stage, but also a bridge for cultural exchange, mutual appreciation of civilization and people-to-people contact, promoting the deepening of the practice of the community of human destiny.

Since ancient times, the Olympic Movement has been a symbol of humanity’s commitment to peace, solidarity, and the preservation of the world.

Although the Newcastle pneumonia epidemic is still raging, the passion, joy and friendship brought by snow and ice sports are still shared by people around the world, and the unity, cooperation and hope shown by the Beijing Winter Olympics are instilling confidence and strength in countries around the world.

“During this past period, we have seen touching stories of athletes from many countries and regions forming deep bonds with volunteers.” Wang Wenbin said, “These moments at the Beijing Winter Olympic Games that shine with the spirit of human solidarity will become fond memories that will forever warm people’s hearts.”
