Troop movements in the Chinese Communist Party

President of China

Chinese President Xi Jinping, who is also general secretary of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), warned on Wednesday, in a speech delivered at a study session of the single party, that the Asian country will “inevitably” face “dangerous storms” in the context of strong tensions with the USA. In his speech, Xi acknowledged that “Chinese modernization, which is an unprecedented project, will inevitably face all kinds of risks, challenges, difficulties, and even dangerous storms, some of which we can anticipate but others not.” Xi spoke of the CCP’s “untamed fighting spirit” with the aim of “opening up new horizons for our cause.” The Chinese president stressed that the Asian giant has “its own development model” that “avoids the myth that modernization equates to westernization.”

At the same time, Xi asked the party to “make efforts to achieve greater efficiency than that of capitalism, while effectively maintaining equity within society.” Xi also mentioned that the Asian giant will face “global challenges” at a time when Beijing assures that the socialist system is also “a functional  even better than in Western countries, which it considers to be in decline. AFP notes that these are Xi’s first public statements since the episode of the alleged Chinese spy balloon that flew over the airspace of the United States, which caused a new political crisis between the two powers and destroyed any attempt at de-escalation in a growing climate of mutual mistrust. It is also the first working meeting attended by the newest members of the political bureau of the CCP, elected at the 20th Congress of the party in October 2022, and at which Xi obtained a third mandate as general secretary. The opening ceremony of the meeting was presided over by Li Qiang, who in March, at the annual meeting of the National People’s Assembly (ANP, the Chinese parliament), is to be appointed prime minister, replacing the current incumbent, Li Keqiang.
