The final results, which were revealed on Sunday, show that Halla Tomasdottir has emerged victorious in an unprecedented turn of events to become the President of Iceland. A major turning point in Icelandic politics was reached when Tomasdottir beat Katrin Jakobsdottir, the previous head of state. High voter turnout and active political participation marked this election, which ended with Tomasdottir receiving 34.3% of the vote and Jakobsdottir receiving 25.5%.The election outcome surprised many political analysts who had anticipated a closer race between the two formidable candidates. Tomasdottir, a prominent businesswoman known for her expertise in finance and leadership, managed to consolidate a broad base of support across the country. Her previous political experience, including a strong showing in the 2016 presidential election where she finished second, undoubtedly bolstered her campaign. Jakobsdottir, 48, who resigned from her position as Prime Minister in April to run for the presidency, faced a challenging campaign. Despite her extensive political experience and previous leadership of a left-right coalition government, she encountered criticism for being perceived as too politically involved for the largely ceremonial role of president. This perception may have swayed public opinion, ultimately contributing to her defeat.
