Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati called on the UN to pass a resolution calling for a “immediate ceasefire” in the ongoing battles between Israel and Hezbollah in a moving speech to the country on Friday. Following a deadly Israeli airstrike on Beirut that tragically claimed 22 lives and injured 117 more, this appeal was made. The prime minister’s appeal for peace emphasizes how urgently diplomatic action is required in a region that has long been riven by instability and bloodshed. Hezbollah and Israel’s long-standing hostilities have frequently descended into violent altercations, with heavy losses on both sides. The humanitarian crisis in Lebanon has gotten worse due to the current escalation, which was characterized by Israeli strikes on Lebanese land. Mikati’s appeal is a reflection of the growing dissatisfaction of Lebanese residents, who are tired of the violent cycles that have characterized their nation for many years.
