JD and Usha Vance Welcome Fourth Child, Alec Neel
Vice President JD Vance and second lady Usha Vance announced on Sunday the birth of their fourth child, a son named Alec Neel Vance – a family event that doubles as a historical footnote, since no wife of a sitting American vice president had given birth in more than a century and a half.
“We are excited to announce that our baby boy, Alec Neel Vance, was born this morning,” the couple said in a statement posted to social media, adding that mother and baby are healthy and that their three older children, Ewan, Vivek and Mirabel, aged four to nine, are overjoyed to meet their little brother. The family thanked the military doctors and staff of Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and the White House Medical Unit.
The historical marker attached to the birth is genuine, and genuinely obscure: the last second lady to have a child while her husband held the office was Ellen Colfax, wife of Vice President Schuyler Colfax, who gave birth to a son in Washington in April 1870, during the presidency of Ulysses S. Grant. The Vances, the nation’s first millennial second family, have now ended a 156-year gap.
The pregnancy was announced on January 20 and had its own small place in the couple’s public story. At a White House event in March, the vice president joked that he had bargained for the baby: his wife, he recounted, told him he could become vice president or have a fourth child – “but, ladies and gentlemen, I am persuasive, because I got both.” Usha Vance later confirmed, more soberly, that she had “never closed the door” on a fourth child, and that the wish had grown on her with time. Vance, who is widely discussed as a potential presidential candidate in 2028, said earlier this year while promoting his new book that he was unlikely to take parental leave.
The White House’s own congratulations arrived in visual form. President Donald Trump shared the first picture of the newborn on Truth Social, an image showing two of the Vance children, Ewan and Mirabel, cradling their baby brother, accompanied by a characteristically effusive note: “Congratulations! A perfect baby boy for the wonderful Vance family.” Coming from a president whose relationship with his vice president is watched for every nuance ahead of 2028, the gesture read as both a family courtesy and a small political blessing, delivered to an audience of millions.

The birth arrives as the second family recalibrates its life around a growing household. According to CNN, the Vances are leasing part of a large property in Middleburg, in rural northern Virginia, seeking what people familiar with the arrangement describe as a measure of normalcy for the children away from Washington’s scrutiny. Usha Vance, a former appellate lawyer who left her career when her husband took office, and who has made childhood literacy her signature cause, complete with a summer reading challenge and a podcast, has spoken openly about the strangeness of raising small children in public view, and the family’s effort to let them simply be kids.
Congratulations flowed in from across the political spectrum, as they had at the pregnancy announcement in January. In a capital that agrees on almost nothing, a healthy baby managed, for a day, to be uncontroversial news.
