Saudi Arabia announced on Sunday the appointment of Faisal bin Saud Al-Mejfel as the new ambassador to Damascus, marking the first such appointment in over a decade. This development comes after a prolonged period of strained relations following the outbreak of the civil war in Syria. The official Saudi Press Agency reported that the Saudi government has chosen Al-Mejfel to lead its diplomatic mission in Syria. In his inaugural statement, the newly appointed ambassador emphasized his commitment to “strengthen the bilateral ties between the two sister countries,” signaling a new chapter in Saudi-Syrian relations. The rift between Saudi Arabia and Syria dates back to 2011, when the Syrian government, led by President Bashar al-Assad, faced a popular uprising that rapidly escalated into a brutal civil war. The conflict drew in various international actors, with Saudi Arabia supporting Syrian rebel groups opposed to Assad’s regime. In 2012, Saudi Arabia severed diplomatic ties with Syria and closed its embassy in Damascus.
