Alain Berset to Become New Secretary General of the Council of Europe

Alain Berset, the former president of Switzerland, was chosen to serve as the next Secretary General of the Council of Europe, a significant appointment that emphasizes the value of seasoned leadership in international institutions. After two close voting rounds on Tuesday night, Berset prevailed over rivals Didier Reynders of Belgium and Indrek Saar of Estonia. On September 18, after the official voting in the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council in Strasbourg, France, he is scheduled to take office. The Council of Europe, founded in 1949 and headquartered in Strasbourg, is one of the oldest and most significant international organizations dedicated to upholding democracy, human rights, and the rule of law across Europe. Comprising 46 member states, the Council’s primary achievement is the European Convention on Human Rights, a cornerstone document that has profoundly shaped the legal and political landscape of the continent.
