In a recent development within the automotive industry, the possibility of Chinese car manufacturers setting up production facilities in Italy has raised concerns within Stellantis, the prominent Franco-Italian automotive group. The head of Stellantis, Italy’s sole major carmaker, has indicated that this move could potentially lead to challenging decisions, including the closure of factories. This statement was made by the CEO of Stellantis, Carlos Tavares, during an event held in Turin on Wednesday. The Italian government has disclosed that discussions are underway with various automakers, including Tesla and Chinese manufacturers like Chery Auto, to explore the option of establishing manufacturing operations in Italy. The objective behind these negotiations is to revitalize domestic car production in Italy, which has experienced a decline in recent years. Carlos Tavares emphasized the importance of maintaining competitiveness in the face of potential pressures arising from increased competition in the market. He highlighted the necessity for Stellantis to intensify efforts to enhance productivity as a means of staying competitive in the evolving landscape of the automotive industry.
