The Regional Holocaust Distortion and Education Conference 2024 is being held in Bucharest as a major move to combat antisemitism and promote inclusivity. The meeting, which was organized by the Romanian and American governments with assistance from the OSCE Chairperson-in-Office, highlights a shared commitment to Holocaust education and the battle against denial and distortion. The event, titled “Holocaust Education and Holocaust Distortion: Current and Emerging Challenges. National Measures in Force,” is being held on October 28-29, 2024. It brings together key stakeholders, including government officials, educators, and representatives from the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) and the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights. The official opening on November 29, 2024, featured a keynote address by Romania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Luminița Odobescu. In her speech, Minister Odobescu highlighted Romania’s proactive measures in combating antisemitism and preserving Holocaust memory. She reaffirmed the nation’s dedication to rejecting and penalizing any forms of antisemitism, while emphasizing the importance of acknowledging historical truths and condemning Holocaust denial.

The conference serves as a platform for discussing both current and emerging challenges in Holocaust education. Participants are exploring effective strategies to integrate Holocaust education into national curricula and address the rising trend of Holocaust distortion. These discussions are crucial in ensuring that future generations understand the atrocities of the Holocaust and the dangers of antisemitism.
Romania’s role as host is particularly significant given its recent efforts to address its past. The country has made strides in Holocaust education and remembrance, recognizing the importance of confronting historical truths. This commitment is reflected in national policies aimed at preserving the memory of Holocaust victims and educating the public about the consequences of intolerance and hatred.
The involvement of the United States and the OSCE highlights the international dimension of this effort. The United States has long been a strong advocate for Holocaust education and combating antisemitism globally. Its collaboration with Romania and other international partners demonstrates a shared commitment to these goals.
Support from the OSCE Chairperson-in-office and the IHRA further amplifies the conference’s impact. These organizations play a critical role in promoting human rights and democratic values, making them vital allies in the fight against Holocaust distortion and antisemitism.
One of the key outcomes anticipated from the conference is the development of actionable strategies and national measures that can be implemented across the region. By sharing best practices and successful initiatives, countries can strengthen their educational frameworks and enhance public awareness of the Holocaust.
The Regional Holocaust Distortion and Education Conference 2024 in Bucharest represent a crucial step in the ongoing fight against antisemitism and the preservation of Holocaust memory. Through international collaboration and national commitment, the conference aims to foster a more inclusive society that acknowledges the past and educates future generations about the dangers of hatred and intolerance. As nations come together to address these pressing issues, the hope is to create a world where the horrors of the Holocaust are never forgotten and never repeated.
