Spain has announced a significant financial contribution of 20 million euros to support the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA). This development comes amid ongoing humanitarian challenges faced by Palestinian refugees, particularly in the Gaza Strip. Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares, after a meeting with UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini in Madrid, highlighted the decision to resume funding to the agency. The move by the Spanish government is informed by the pressing humanitarian conditions in Gaza, which continue to deteriorate due to a combination of political instability, economic blockade, and military confrontations. The UNRWA has been a pivotal organization in delivering aid to Palestinian refugees since its establishment in 1949. Its mandate includes providing essential services such as education, healthcare, and emergency relief. However, the agency has faced criticism and financial challenges in recent years, with some donor countries expressing concerns over issues such as operational transparency and efficiency.
