In a development that could signal a geopolitical shift of historic proportions, The Times has reported on a potential high-level summit between Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping, and U.S. President Donald Trump, set to take place this September in China. The occasion? The 80th anniversary of the end of World War II. It’s a symbolic moment steeped in both memory and modern political weight.
However, the Kremlin declined to confirm the report. Speaking to the Russian state news agency TASS, presidential spokesperson Dmitri Peskov stated plainly:

We don’t know anything about the possibility of such a meeting.

The Power Triangle: Xi, Putin and Trump

The idea of a trilateral summit between the world’s most powerful leaders is already sending ripples through the global diplomatic community. According to The Times, President Xi, who has already received confirmation of attendance from Putin, may extend an invitation to Trump to join the commemorative events. Chinese analysts and even ordinary citizens are reportedly advocating for the moment to be used as a platform for strategic dialogue among the three powers.

This comes as Xi and Putin’s relationship, once declared a “no-limits friendship” before the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, continues to raise eyebrows in the West. China has walked a careful tightrope. On one hand, calling for the respect of every country’s territorial integrity (including Ukraine), and on the other, stressing the importance of considering Russia’s security concerns.

The West has repeatedly accused Beijing of indirectly supporting Moscow’s war effort, a charge Chinese officials firmly deny.

Trump’s Return and the Clock Ticking on Ukraine

Since returning to the White House, President Trump has resumed communications with Putin. The two leaders have reportedly held at least six phone calls, expressing mutual interest in a direct meeting, though no date has been set.

In a recent statement, Trump issued what many interpreted as a diplomatic ultimatum: 50 days for Putin to reach a peace deal with Ukraine. This is a deadline that would expire at the start of September, aligning with the rumored summit.

If the meeting materializes, it could become a defining moment in modern diplomacy, not just for what it symbolizes: the leaders of three global powers acknowledging a shared historical legacy, but for what it could initiate: backchannel negotiations, realignment of alliances, or even a path to ending the war in Ukraine.

A Strategic Opportunity Or Just a Rumor?

While China appears to be entertaining the idea, and Trump and Putin are reportedly willing to meet, nothing is confirmed. Analysts warn that the absence of public confirmation from the Kremlin and Washington could mean the plan is still in early stages or might not happen at all.

Still, the symbolism is potent. Three leaders, each wielding outsized influence on the global stage, gathered in a country that has grown into a superpower since WWII, reflecting not only on the past but possibly redrawing the contours of the future.

If the rumors prove true, the world may witness a summit that rivals Yalta but in reverse: not to end a war, but to prevent another.
