The electoral authority of Algeria has announced that President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has been re-elected for a second term, having received nearly 95% of the vote. After the elections on Saturday, the announcement was made on Sunday. Mohamed Charfi, the head of the electoral authority, announced that out of the 5.630 million votes cast, about 5.320 million went to the independent candidate Tebboune, accounting for an astounding 94.65% of the total votes. This re-election marks a significant moment in Algeria’s political landscape, as Tebboune continues his leadership amidst a backdrop of economic and social challenges. Since his initial election, Tebboune has focused on addressing issues such as unemployment, economic diversification, and political reforms. His overwhelming victory in the recent elections suggests broad public support for his policies and leadership style. The electoral authority has emphasized the transparency of the election process, describing the elections as a reflection of “electoral maturity” within the Algerian populace. This statement aims to reinforce the credibility of the electoral process in the eyes of both national and international observers.

While the electoral authority has not yet released updated data on voter turnout, it was reported to be 48% at 20:00 local time on Election Day. This figure, though relatively moderate, indicates a significant level of engagement from the Algerian electorate. The participation rate can be seen as a measure of public interest and involvement in shaping the nation’s political future.
The reported turnout suggests that while a majority of registered voters participated, there remains a substantial portion of the electorate that either abstained or was unable to vote. Understanding the reasons behind this partial disengagement could be crucial for future elections and political engagement strategies.
Tebboune’s re-election presents an opportunity for continuity in Algeria’s domestic and foreign policies. His administration is expected to continue focusing on economic reforms aimed at reducing the country’s dependency on oil and gas revenues, which have historically been a major part of Algeria’s economy. Diversification into sectors such as renewable energy, technology, and agriculture is anticipated.
On the social front, Tebboune has pledged to address issues such as youth unemployment and housing shortages, which have been persistent challenges. His government’s ability to effectively tackle these issues will be critical in maintaining public support and fostering national stability.
Internationally, Tebboune’s re-election is likely to be closely watched by global powers with vested interests in North Africa. Algeria’s strategic position and resources make it an important player in regional geopolitics. Tebboune’s administration has maintained a policy of non-interference and balanced relations with both Western and Eastern blocs, a stance that is expected to continue.
Algeria’s foreign policy continues to be heavily reliant on its participation in regional security, especially in the Sahel. Tebboune’s leadership will therefore be essential in resolving regional issues and promoting collaboration with other nations.Algeria finds itself at a juncture of opportunity and struggle as President Abdelmadjid Tebboune begins his second term in office.
