Today, on May 25th, nations across Africa and around the world come together to celebrate Africa Day, an annual event that commemorates the founding of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) in 1963, now known as the African Union (AU). This day symbolizes Africa’s collective quest for unity, peace, and development. It serves as a reminder of the continent’s rich cultural heritage, diverse societies, and the significant strides it has made over the decades Africa Day marks the anniversary of the OAU’s establishment, which was a watershed moment in Africa’s political history. The founding fathers of the OAU, including notable figures such as Ghana’s Kwame Nkrumah and Ethiopia’s Haile Selassie, envisioned a united continent that could collectively address its post-colonial challenges. The OAU’s transformation into the African Union in 2002 further emphasized the continent’s commitment to integration, socio-economic development, and enhanced governance.
