Romania’s Wake-Up Call: General Gabriel Oprea Warns of Strait of Hormuz Peril

Retired General Gabriel Oprea, former Deputy Prime Minister for National Security and current president of the “Mihai Viteazul” Union of Military Personnel and Police Officers, has issued a stark warning that could reshape how Romanians view distant conflicts. At the heart of his message lies the Strait of Hormuz—a narrow but vital artery for global oil shipments now caught in the crosshairs of escalating tensions between the United States and Iran. Oprea stresses that any disruption here would ripple straight into Romanian homes, affecting energy supplies, inflation, and everyday living standards.
The “Mihai Viteazul” Union and the Party for the Fatherland, Military, and Police share this deep concern. They highlight how the confrontation risks destabilizing regional security, energy markets, and the broader European economy. With Romania heavily reliant on stable energy imports, the organizations warn that an expanded conflict could trigger supply shocks, price volatility, and inflationary pressures felt across the continent.

Recent developments around the Strait have already heightened risks to energy transport routes, market stability, and overall economic resilience. In response, Oprea and the two organizations urge Romanian authorities to act decisively with coordinated, preventive measures rather than react after the fact.
Among their key recommendations are the creation of a permanent inter-agency analysis and response unit, the updating of national energy security plans along with verification of strategic reserves, and the preparation of targeted measures to shield the population and small businesses from potential price surges. They also call for strict monitoring of markets to curb price gouging, stronger protection of critical infrastructure and cybersecurity defenses, updated plans to support Romanian citizens in the Middle East, and continued close consultations with NATO and EU partners.
As the situation evolves, Oprea’s message serves as a timely reminder that even faraway flashpoints can have profound consequences at home. Romania, they argue, must remain vigilant and proactive to safeguard its security and prosperity in an increasingly uncertain world.
